Like no other
At PermaCann, we are at the forefront of innovation in the Australian cannabis industry. We are dedicated to introducing and refining alternative cultivation methods that have yet to be fully explored in our region. Our relentless pursuit of excellence drives us to pioneer these methods, including the creation of our own growing mediums, nutrients, and amendments from materials sourced directly from our land.
While we strive to be as self-reliant as possible, we also recognize the importance of responsibly sourcing essential nutrients and inputs to complement our in-house production. These carefully selected external inputs are chosen to ensure the highest standards of soil health and plant growth enhancement. In an industry often dependent on third-party vendors, PermaCann takes pride in its significant strides towards operational self-sufficiency and sustainable cultivation.
Our livestock
Our operation proudly maintains a selection of animals, comprising 80 head of Black Angus steer, 50 Damara sheep of stud quality, 200 Hi-Liner Brown layer hens, and 10 Berkshire swine with stud lineage and heritage listing. These breeds, not native to Australia, have been chosen for their genetic value and are crucial in maintaining biosecurity presence within our boundary, and also ensuring these breeds live on in Australia for decades to come. Due to import restrictions, preserving their genetics is vital. Our primary focus is utilizing their manure-producing capabilities. We practice a combination of strip grazing and a feedlot-style feed troughs in the open for supplementary feeding ensuring efficient manure collection. The collected manure undergoes a two-stage composting process: Initially composted utilising biodynamic composting practices and amendments for 5-6 months, followed by further decomposition through raised worm farms for an additional 6-12 months producing the highest quality vermicompost (worm castings) we can.
Our Berkshire pigs, renowned for their marbled meat, bring a gourmet quality to the table, prized by culinary aficionados. The Black Angus cattle, famed for their rich, flavorful beef, are a staple for any discerning meat lover. Similarly, our Damara sheep are selected for their robustness and the exceptional quality of their meat, making them a top choice for both sustainability and taste. And finally ever trusty old hi-liner brown hens, often regarded as the steady workhorses of the egg-laying world due to their remarkable consistency and prolific laying abilities, often outperforming other breeds in terms of quantity without compromising the quality of the eggs.
These carefully chosen breeds reflect our commitment to quality, sustainability, and the pleasure of great food.
Animal husbandry
Animal husbandry, is the cornerstone of any successful livestock operation, and thrives on a balance of care, knowledge, and a deep connection with the livestock. Each animal, a valued membre of our operation, and a natural approach to their care is not just a method, it's a philosophy.
Our agricultural specialists work hard each day to ensure our livestock are catered to like the royalty they are. We toil day and night ensuring an abundance of varied feedstock for our animals, it will come as no surprise to see our nieghbous animals wanting to join the party.
We understand that the well-being of each animal is tied to the health of the entire ecosystem on our land. It's a symbiotic relationship where the land nourishes the livestock, and in turn, they enrich the land. Our holistic approach means we're constantly observing and interacting with our animals, ensuring they have everything they need to thrive.
Our commitment to ethical care is woven into every aspect of our operation, from the sprawling pastures to the well-crafted shelters. Success is measured in the wellbeing of our animals and the health of the land, not just in produce. Our approach to animal husbandry focuses on creating environments where animals can naturally resist diseases, though we strive for minimal injections on our animals, anilmal welfare is paramount to us and our herd. We emphasize breeding resilient livestock, chosen for their ability to thrive naturally. This holistic method ensures the health and longevity of our herd, rooted in a philosophy of natural wellbeing.
From farm to fertility
In the realm of agriculture, the term 'you are what you eat' takes on a profound significance, reaching far beyond the dining table to the very fields that sustain us. At PermaCann, we embrace this principle wholeheartedly, applying it to both our animal care and soil health practices. Our team of dedicated agricultural specialists are unwavering in their commitment to provide only the finest feedstoks available to our animals, and to our staff. We understand that the well-being of our livestock directly correlates to tangible benefits for our entire ecosystem. This emphasis on top-tier feed is crucial because our animals are not merely inhabitants of our farm; they are integral to a sustainable cycle that enriches our land in every aspect. The high quality of their feed results in nutrient-dense, mineral-rich manure, a key component in enhancing the health of our soil, and ultimately in the quality produce we provide for our community near and far.
Our philosophy of animal husbandry is grounded in deep respect and attentive care. We create stress-free, nurturing environments for every animal on our farm, ensuring their well-being and, in turn, the exceptional quality of the manure they produce. This manure, a byproduct of our focus on quality feedstock, is indispensable in our garden beds. In stark contrast to many conventional farms, we reject synthetic substances, opting for a blend that mother nature herself developed, and we improve on that. This organic matter, primarily derived from our well-nourished livestock, forms the bedrock of our soil's fertility. It's in this rich and balanced soil that our plants, including our highly-valued medicinal cannabis, thrive. They grow robustly in this nutrient-rich environment, yielding a product that embodies our steadfast commitment to excellence.
At PermaCann, our ethos is centered around a simple yet profound belief -- the best inputs invariably lead to the best outputs. Every step in our process, from the carefully chosen feed for our livestock to the meticulous nurturing of our plants, is geared towards achieving a harmonious balance that benefits not just our farm and products we produce, but the environment as a whole. Our journey from farm to fertility is more than just a process; it's a testament to our unwavering dedication to sustainable, responsible agriculture. We pride ourselves on a cycle of excellence that starts with the finest feed and culminates in the most fertile grounds, yielding nothing but the best, exactly as nature intended.
